The invisible enemy of water pumps

When checking a water pump, you might be confused by the coloured spot on the water pump reservoir. This tinted spot is often associated with coolant leakage; however, it is necessary to make sure that this is not a natural leak. There are several ways to check if the leak is natural. If you're a mechanic, the easiest way is to use a pressure tester like the Cooling System Test & Refill Kit MV4525 from Mityvac. The new patented technology combines simultaneous testing and monitoring of pressure, vacuum, and temperature, providing real-time data that goes far beyond the capabilities of a simple pressure tester.

The invisible enemy of water pumps

Have you ever experienced an issue with your water pump? A water pump failure can happen at any time. The most common sign of a water pump failure is coolant leakage under the front of the car.

How to correctly check a water pump

After filling the cooling system, carry out a final visual inspection to ensure that there are no leaks. When a water pump is new, minor seepage from the bleed port is normal as it takes about ten minutes of operation for the pump's internal mechanical seal to seal properly ( break-in period). More seepage and dripping from the bleed port after this break-in period, or leaks from the mounting surface, indicate a fault and are indicative of a defective part or improper installation. Remember that some leaks are visible when the engine is cold, while others are visible when the engine is hot.

In most cases, the unseen problem is the heart of a water pump failure. The formation of corrosion and calcium deposits could damage the seating surface of the SiC seal. The pump will stop sealing between the so-called "wet" and "dry" parts, which are essential for the proper functioning of the water pump.

The lack of inhibitors in the coolant, to prevent the formation of corrosion and calcium deposits, becomes the invisible enemy of a water pump

The cleanliness of the cooling system and proper mixture of distilled water and concentrated cooling liquid play a key role in the life of the water pump seal and its proper functioning. Inhibitors have a variable lifespan. It ranges from 2 to 5 years depending on the design of the cooling system and service intervals. If you do not have the right mixture or do not change the fluids because it seems clean, you run the risk that a lack of inhibitors will cause corrosion and other impurities into the system. The lack of inhibitors in the coolant, to prevent the formation of corrosion and calcium deposits, becomes the invisible enemy.

It is also important to verify that the standard indicated on the cooling mixture matches the standard required by the vehicle manufacturer. The colour of the cooling mixture may guide you in choosing the right the correct ratio of the mixture, but the life of the inhibitors may vary considerably due to the mixture used.

The ideal cooling mixture is set by the car manufacturer. The use of distilled water is important to reduce the possibility of calcium deposits in the cooling system.

Don't let invisible enemies damage the water pump and ruin your installation.

Fast, easy and cost-effective: the advantages of the SKF speedi sleeve for mechanics

2025-04-16

When replacing a crankshaft seal, mechanics often find that the shaft surface is too worn for a proper seal, leading to persistent oil leaks. In the past, the only solutions were either replacing the crankshaft—an expensive and time-consuming process—or re-machining the surface, which required specialized tools and additional labor. Fortunately, there is now a simpler and more cost-effective solution: SKF Speedi Sleeve.

Ensure safety with high quality SKF brake pads

2024-05-28

The braking system is one of the most critical components of a vehicle and has a direct impact on safety. Among the various elements within this system, brake pads are crucial. They ensure that the vehicle stops safely and effectively, making the choice of high-quality pads essential. With more than a century of experience, SKF excels in the development of OE and Aftermarket solutions, including brake rotors with integrated bearings, and offers nearly 900 different brake pad sets for different applications.

Symptoms & signs of a bad wheel bearing

2023-01-16

We are used to driving our cars with the only concern being when we we need to schedule regular maintenance, but there are some dangerous issues we can avert from happening just by being aware of some not-so-subtle symptoms.

Introducing safe, reliable, wireless and continuous tyre pressure monitoring

2023-01-16

For a steer axle with a 12,000-lb. rating, commonly-accepted pressure is 110 psi, and most drivers assume 85 psi is okay. But for every 10% of underinflation, you’re looking at a 1% reduction in fuel economy. Multiply that by the miles you travel in a year and you can expect:

Wheel bearing: how long do they last and when to replace them?

2023-01-16

The wheel bearings on your car can last a lifetime or may not last very long.  It all depends on several aspects that we will discuss below. Before talking about replacing wheel bearing, let’s take a quick look at what can cause it to fail.

Rear suspension: the ultimate guide from SKF

2023-01-16

The main function of rear suspension (and the front one) is to keep the cars main body from touching the ground and maintaining the wheels on the road. Another function is to enhance the stability on turns and to make the ride more comfortable.

Timing belt vs timing chain: which is better?

2023-01-16

First, we need to know what these two different mechanisms do for our car. It’s simple, they both perform the same function which is to synchronize the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft(s) so that the engine's valves open and close at the proper time. They both operate in the same way and the only difference is their shape and the materials they are made of. The question is, which is better?

What is included in a timing belt kit?

2023-01-16

In the engine, what allows the correct synchronization between the crankshaft and the camshaft is the timing system. This movement is produced by one of two elements: a timing belt or a timing chain. In this article, we tell you which components are included in the SKF timing belt kit.
