Driveline troubleshooting tips
Driveshafts transfer engine torque from the gearbox to the wheel hub at a constant rate, without friction variations or play in cars equipped with an independent suspension system. Driveshafts need to bear stress without creating additional inertia dur to their weight.

The driveshaft is typically composed of three main elements:
- A fixed external constant velocity joint (CV joint).
- An internal plunging velocity joint.
- A shaft that has a reciprocal connection.
To ensure the best possible functioning of the driveshaft, the right design decisions must be made.
Shaft designs:
- Work when overall system noise and vibration requirements are met.
- No optimal design or combination of features are needed.
- Different design choices can meet the same requirements.
Driveshafts can be equipped with:
- Hollow or solid bars
- Dumpers, either external or internal to the bar
- A bearing
- A flange to host the bearing
Safety precautions
Before removing the driveshaft and CV joint, you must:
- Raise the vehicle.
- Loosen the retaining bolt.
- Remove the wheel.
Never move the vehicle when the wheel-bearing hexagon nut or the retaining bolt is loose, as it will damage the wheel bearing and shorten its lifespan. To simplify drive-shaft removal, undo the securing bolts between the wheel-bearing housing and the lower knuckle ball joint. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommended procedures for removal and replacement. Always support the vehicle per garage health and safety standards.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Q: What are the steps when a customer reports grease leaking under the vehicle?
- Carefully inspect the wheel side and gearbox side of the CV-joint boot for breaks, rips, and tears
- If the grease is very dirty, check the CV joint to ensure it isn’t damaged.
- Remove the damaged boot.
- Remove all grease from the CV joint
- Refill the CV joint with grease.
- Replace and fit a new, appropriate boot.
- Tighten the boot clamps with the proper tools.
Q: What are the steps when a customer reports noise while driving?
For a general noise coming from the wheel corner, inspect the hub. If normal:
- Examine the boots and replace any with cracks.
- Examine the plunging movement of the gearbox-side CV joint, and replace if needed.
- Examine the wheel-side CV joint with the wheel free to move to stimulate steering. Noise means replace the CV joint.
Q: What are the steps when noise happens as the vehicle starts moving forward or reverse?
- Try to recreate the noise with the vehicle off and the gear engaged.
- If the noise occurs, replace the entire driveshaft.
Q: What are the steps when a customer reports problems only during steering?
- Examine the boots and replace any with cracks.
- Examine the wheel-side CV joint with the wheel free to move to stimulate steering. Noise means replace the CV joint.

For a steer axle with a 12,000-lb. rating, commonly-accepted pressure is 110 psi, and most drivers assume 85 psi is okay. But for every 10% of underinflation, you’re looking at a 1% reduction in fuel economy. Multiply that by the miles you travel in a year and you can expect:

We are used to driving our cars with the only concern being when we we need to schedule regular maintenance, but there are some dangerous issues we can avert from happening just by being aware of some not-so-subtle symptoms.

The wheel bearings on your car can last a lifetime or may not last very long. It all depends on several aspects that we will discuss below. Before talking about replacing wheel bearing, let’s take a quick look at what can cause it to fail.

It is not necessary to replace both at the same time, however, it is highly recommended due to a high risk of engine damage. All parts of the synchronous drive have the same mileage and wear. If one of the parts is not replaced and loaded again by the timing belt adjustment, this can lead to a failure after a short time. Also, this could save money in the long run as the mechanic only has to do the work to get to the synchronous drive once.

The timing system is a crucial part of the four-stroke internal combustion engine. Its components drive the synchronized rotation of the camshaft(s), ensuring the engine’s inlet and outlet valves open and close at the proper times. This means that if any of the timing components fail, the car will no longer operate properly, which can cause costly damage to the engine.

When checking a water pump, you might be confused by the coloured spot on the water pump reservoir. This tinted spot is often associated with coolant leakage; however, it is necessary to make sure that this is not a natural leak. There are several ways to check if the leak is natural. If you're a mechanic, the easiest way is to use a pressure tester like the Cooling System Test & Refill Kit MV4525 from Mityvac. The new patented technology combines simultaneous testing and monitoring of pressure, vacuum, and temperature, providing real-time data that goes far beyond the capabilities of a simple pressure tester.
